Roses Amid Thorns: Stabat Mater Atelier

Art School in Tyler, TX, Teaching Classical Art

Dear Friends,

Scala is pleased to partner with The Stabat Mater Foundation, which supports a traditional art school in the Rose Capital of America—Tyler, Texas. David and I were honored to visit in March and see the great art being made—portraits, landscapes, and sacred art. If roses can flourish in Texas's often dry and thorny landscape, then a million roses will bloom out of this fantastic art school!

We met Robert Puschautz, the Executive Director of Stabat Mater, when he attended Scala’s conference on Art, the Sacred, and the Common Good in 2023. He not only fills private and public spaces with remarkable art, but he also teaches students who will carry forward the tradition. Students’ faces lit up when David walked in—they eagerly showcased their art in progress. They had an afternoon seminar with David in which they inquired about some of his favorite topics: how to learn from the masters while developing one’s own style, how to create art in which the form and content convey a unified message and resonate with today’s culture, and how to maintain an active prayer life that fuels creativity.

At the Catholic Cathedral of Tyler, David spoke to a large audience about his journey as an artist, inspiring others to pursue their God-given creative vocations. A culture of beauty is essential to a culture of faith.

Stay tuned for more ways Scala is helping to train the next generation of culture creators. Look out for emails from David and me about the impressive Stabat Mater Foundation!

For now, I’ll let these evangelizing artists and their art speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Regards,

Margarita Mooney Clayton, Ph.D
